Thankfulness

I'm so behind on blogging I tell ya...working fulll time and being a Mommy doesn't leave you much down time! That being said, here are some updates on what's been going on.

Reed's First Thanksgiving
Bryan and I packed up one baby with a cold, one excited dog, and two parents in need of a vacation. We spent the holiday at Bryan's Aunt's home in Virginia with his parents and Grandma. Bryan's parents and Aunt spent a lot of time preparing a wonderful Thanksgiving meal. All we had to do was be there. It was delicious and we were fed like it was Thanksgiving all weekend long. Reed "crawled" around the large open spaces of the house. Have I told you he's "Crawling"? He doens't lift up his knees or belly, but instead he pushes off with his right toes and pulls foward with his arms. It's interesting, but it works! Reed battled a cold while we there so I am not sure if that was affecting him, or the fact that he was not in his room at home, but he did NOT sleep while we were there. He was up both nights screaming and fussing at us unless we were holding him in the recliner. Thank the Lord for that recliner. Maybe Reed was just using the "being away from home" excuse so he could spend more time in our arms.

Lena certainly had a grand time!  Including her, there were 3 dogs and 2 cats. I think Lena was the loudest by far (clearly she's recovered quite well).

Thanks so much to Aunt Fran for hosting all of us!

On Saturday we headed back to MD where my parents hosted Thanksgiving #2 at their house. My Mom prepared a scrumptious meal and set a beautiful table. We all enjoyed it after Brayden said the Thanksgiving prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. A must prior to every official Thanksgiving meal right? We missed Linsay and Chase as poor Chase was running a fever.

I obviously have so much to be thankful for!

Relaxing

Aunt Fran pulled out this amazing old rocker for Reed to try out and he even got to take it home!

Just some other photos that were hanging out on my phone from past weeks:

Reed "party" shopping

Grocery shopping :-)
Last but not least, Reed is 11 Months Old Today!!! The official countdown to 1 begins today and I am feeling bittersweet about it as I am having a hard time believing he is going to be a whole year old in 30 days.  Big sigh of disbelief and amazement.  We've grown along with Reed in so many unique and fulfilling ways that were unimaginable prior to the arrival of this special little man!  More on that later!!!

Nov 16th, a celebration of Birthdays!

Yesterday was a great day, our very close friends Jamie and Joe welcomed their baby girl into the world! Happy Birthday beautiful Olivia! We can't wait to meet you!

Yesterday was also the "Gpa's" birthday. Happy Birthday Paul!

This picture was taken back in August but it still surprises me when I look at it. Gpa apparently has the "sleep" touch. Reed loves to take naps on Gpa and I'm pretty sure Gpa likes it just as much. :-) One morning when Gpa was over to watch Reed, and I was getting ready to leave for work, Gpa held Reed. Reed started to play with Gpa's necklace and just like that, decided that it would be a good time for a Gpa nap, and off he went to dreamland! This isn't a norm for Reed, so it's pretty cute and special. Gpa's are for napping, thats for sure.

Lucky Lena

My sweet Lena has had a rather tough past week. I think she saw the light at one point.

Last Thursday we woke to our dog getting sick, we were worried but thought maybe she just ate something bad. As the morning went on, she got sick again. I had to leave for work and so did Bryan. Luckily Bryan and I both had a weird feeling about this and he was able to take off at noon and come home to check on her. She had gotten sick again. He held her in his lap for a few hours till she got sick yet again, it was time to call the vet. He took her in (thank you Bryan!) and after x-rays, blood work, and a thorough doggie check up, they confirmed that she had swallowed a forgein object(s) and they were stuck....just like that, emergency surgery began.

Bryan and I sat at home and worried while we shook our heads in disbelief at the situation. There was always a chance she might not make it through surgery. 3 hours later the Vet called and said Lena swallowed two objects...one being a rough metal object about 1inch long and the other a red hard plastic object that oddly resembled a dog paw, a bit bigger than a quarter. This paw-like object was in fact the one that was stuck and blocking her small intestines. The good news, she made it through surgery. The bad news is they had to take out a FOOT and a HALF of dead intestines! Had we waited any longer, the next day even, we would not be seeing our little brown Lena again.

These objects did not come from our home, our only assumption is they were licked up and swallowed on a walk one night that week.

They put her back together and stapled her up and saved the objects for us to ponder. Poor Lena spent that night at the vet all by herself. The Vet did stay with her till midnight to make sure she woke and her temp was ok. I on the other hand woke every hour thinking about how she needed her blanket and how cold and lonely she was. I called first thing in the morning and they reported that Lena was having a hard time maintaining her body temperature and wasn't eating, and that she was in pain. She was on a "bear hugger" to keep her warm which is a super sweet sad image. Bryan and I spent that day in tears with our thoughts all over the place; "she's only 3, why would she swallow something like that? How did she get that down? Where is it from? Will she be ok?" We were then told that she would need to stay another night to continue the IV's and get her temp up BUT they were closed on Saturdays so we would have to transfer her to the Dogs and Cats Emergency Vet in Bowie.

Our crew of 3, drove to the Vet and picked up our 4th. She was p a t h e t i c. I thought maybe she would perk up for one second, but nothing. She just laid in my arms while the Vet explained it all to us. We drove her to Vet #2 with visions of "this being the last time with Lena" ran through our minds. We kissed, petted, and sweet talked her and admitted her in. I really liked that they had 24 hour care here and we could call whenever we wanted to check on her.

I called before we went to bed that night and they reported that she was resting comfortably. I woke that morning and called right away to check on her again. A sweet chipper nurse told me that she had maintained her body temperature overnight and that she licked a meatball (a meatball? wow, she's not going to want to go home)  and she also reported that she ate a little, and that she likes to be "hand fed". I started thinking Lena was milking this.....anyways, she said if Lena stays this way we can pick her up today!

Bryan picked her up and she was back home where I had turned on the fireplace, placed her bed in front of it, with the sun shining perfectly on it and fluffed up her favorite blanket. Lena laid in that bed for the next 12 hours straight. Her battle wounds contain about 7 staples up and down her long belly. She's on a few different meds, pain meds at first and now antibiotics for a few weeks.

It took her a few days to act like "Lena" again but I am happy to report that she's back to walking around the house, licking the floor, begging for bananas, and barking at any molecule that floats by all while wearing a fashionable cone.

As long as we continue in this direction we hope that she will be ok. Infection is always a scary thought in the back of our minds, but we hope she gets a clean bill of health when she has her staples removed next Tuesday.

Lena, don't do that to us again. Long live that little brown dog!

It was a Sock Monkey kinda Halloween

The Bry-Dad picked up Reed early on Monday and took him into work for a little "show off your kids on Halloween" hour. Below are some of his coworker's babes. This was sort of a big deal for me. Bryan hadn't taken Reed anywhere without me yet and I have to admit I was a little nervous. Not because I don't think Bryan can't handle it but more for me! It was strange to not have a car seat in my car, to not pick him up, come home to him, etc etc. I came home that day to just Lena, how odd! Was my life ever like that? Instead of "relaxing" till they got home, I stared out the window and called, and stared. I know, I know...I'm a bit of a "Manic Mom", but hey, it's my first and he's still a "baby", I will get over it. ;) Maybe.....

Regardless, the Bry-Dad did a great job!

Once home and back in my arms, we had our little Sock Monkey adventure and walked to Aunt Katie and Uncle Troy's to show him off. We passed lots of kiddies and I even got creeped out by the haunting sounds of a nearby festive set up. Yikes. Lena didn't like it either.

On Sunday we went to "ZooBooo" at the Maryland Zoo. It was soooo cold!! We met up with Reed's redheaded bud and I am so very bummed that we did not get a picture of them together. His friend was an adorable lion, way too cute for his own good. :-) Bryan looked like a tourist and snapped lots of photos of animals which I will share soon. This Zoo in particular is great because the animals are super duper close.

Hope your Halloween was Rad!
